The background includes pieces of fish leather from a fish tannery we visited in Iceland, Icelandic flat beach pebbles, encaustic paint, copper sheet and used coffee filters. Down the center of the piece is a map of the Mid-Atlantic Rift, upon which the practically brand new, geologically-speaking, country sits. Most interestingly, there’s pumice rock and rusted metal from the ruins of homes on Heimaey Island, just off the southern coast of Iceland, that was nearly destroyed by a volcano in 1973. Floating on the wire grid are pieces of burned silk organza. The tension of the wires is maintained by the bamboo sticks. As a postcard, this would likely require a lot of stamps.
